Synopsis:
A scream in the night, and in that instant the world changed
... or at least, it appeared to. There have always been forces
in the world and voices in the night: some friendly and other
malevolent. Invisible until summoned; they slide through dimensions
as people walk through doorways. They wait, and watch the doings
of Man closely ... each for their own reasons. Sometimes, they
appear ... and when they do, the world changes. Everyone knows
about Boogiepop: meet her one dark night and you are taken. People
tell each other the stories and laugh: no one believes that she
exists in this day and age. Still, there are some strange things
that appear to be going on just below the surface. Darkness takes
many forms, though. Evil and good intermingle. The glass shatters.
Time stands still. There is something in the darkness. You aren't
alone. Are you safe? Five years ago, there was a string of grisly
murders that shook the city to its core ... and in the present,
psychic echoes reverberate. Contains the entire series!

DVD REVIEW:
BOOGIEPOP PHANTOM is
a horror anime that people have drawn comparisons to the popular
LAIN series. I do want to say that there is no comparison between
these two anime.
If anything, the only
comparison is that both are thinking animations. That is, you
need to watch the whole series to truly understand the anime.
Each episode is about
a student who is murdered. You get to watch each story and wonder
about this BOOGIEPOP PHANTOM that's killing them.
This is one of those
animations that may take a few viewings to truly understand and
possibly appreciate. The director's commentary has provided some
really interesting insight into the making of the series, especially
for the dub English market. Of course, I don't recommend listening
to the commentary until you are done watching this animation.
The collected series
comes in a really nice package. With a total of three DVD's and
a music CD featuring classical music's most haunting composer,
Richard Wagner. The CD consists of two tracks (Overture, "Die
Meistersinger Von Nurnberg" and the second track is a whistling
Boogiepop version). As for special features, you are treated with
a commentary from the Right Stuf staff.
So, if you want a change
and want something that's really trippy and dark, BOOGIEPOP PHANTOM
awaits you.
